Lietvesi is typical Saimaa north of the Salpausselkäs: the labyrinthine watercourse area is punctuated by rocky islands and intersected by a stretchs of eskers, remnants from the ice age. Typically for the area, the main type of rock in the bedrock is garnet-cordierite-mica gneiss intersected by granite dikes. There is also an ancient, steep-sloped hill fort nearby which features remnants of rocky embankments. The hill fort is located on the southwestern shore of Ihantsalo.
There is a resting place, where you can admire beautiful landscapes, on the island called Rapeikko on Lietvedentie road. During the summer months there is a kiosk at the small parking area. There is also a Saimaa Geopark sign: https://saimaageopark.fi/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/geopark_opastaulut_lietvesi_1806_web.pdf
You can also find more information about the Lietvesi scenic road and how to get there on the South Karelian Foundation for Recreation Areas’ webpages.
