The geopark site consists of the northern part of the Suomensalo island, whose diverse landscape features rocky areas, esker scenery, and related ancient shorelines. The area emerged from underneath the continental ice sheet around 11,600 years ago when the Baltic ice lake stage was ending, and the island’s esker areas were shaped during the subsequent Southern Saimaa ice lake stage.

The Suomensalo area is characterised by steep banks consisting of round stones, shore walls piled up by the ice, a kettle pond and shores dyed red by potassium feldspar. The site’s mica gneiss rocks rise up to 106msl and provide fantastic views over Kuolimo.

The island of Suomensalo can only be reached by boat or canoe. The island has a landing area for canoeists and boaters with a lean-to, a firewood shelter and an outdoor toilet.
